Financial planning: Why is it important to plan ahead?

Planning ahead is the core of financial planning. When an individual decides to take control of their financial destiny, planning is everything. It begins with an internal desire to have more than what is in front of them. They start to take small steps towards the future they want instead of settling for the present they have. An individual replaces complaining with action. Productivity replaces reactivity and an individual systematically comes up a plan to move ahead economically.

The factors involved with this process is a concrete choice to move forward, a written plan consisting of 1 year, five year and ten year goals, and a mentor. When these are put in place, a person will have the tools they need to get to the next level.

A written plan is an integral part of financial planning. Without one a person will not have a clear direction as to where they want to go. It also makes it more substantial because it confirms the direction they want to go in their life. It is equally important to have goals within the written plan. A goal is defined as a something a person plans to achieve in a specific amount of time. For example, a goal is buying a house in five years. However, that is simply the beginning. The steps to get there are more defined.

A mentor can be a friend or money coach who helps keep a person on track. Everyone needs help from time to time. The money coach will help assess where a person is with their finances and provide steps to help them change them positively. The person is trained in the financial realm and can help them set up a budget in some cases. A budget helps a person to utilize there funds properly.

Not planning financially could heed unnecessary stress and hardship. Going from day to day without a direction is not only unwise, it is dangerous. This is attributed to the need for us as human beings to have “purpose” in life. Deep down we were all made for a reason. We were put here to contributed in some way. Having a goal and direction in life gives us a reason to get up in the morning and individuals who “wonder” without one are at risk for feeling empty inside. This is why some individuals become depressed over a period of time. Deep down they feel like they have nothing to live for.

This is turned around when a person chooses to have a financial plan for their life. Having a to-do list will change everything. It will fill an empty void in ones life. Knowing you have the control to change what is in front of you is quite exhilerating.
